…No Greater Joy than Giving

Narayanan

Narayanan Krishnan is a social worker and philanthropist who is most famous for being hailed as one of the CNN Heroes of the Year in 2010. A person filled with service and compassion, Narayanan is the founder and current head of the Akshaya Trust, a non-profit organization focused on feeding the homeless, poor and mentally ill, giving them free haircuts, and providing homes so they would not need to stay on the streets.

As he says in an interview:

“I would like to ask the question that as an individual what you did. As an individual what impact have you created for society? You will see on the roadside, a BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, but on the same day you will see a homeless person. There is no bun, no burger for this person. You drive by in a Mercedes… but do you see the beggar on the sidewalk?”

The term “Be the change you want to see in the world” has become cliché for a lot of people today, but there are still some who prove that these words are true. A good example of this is Narayanan Krishnan, who for more than ten years now has been impacting the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of homeless, poor and mentally ill people in India.

The Importance of a Master, Teacher, Mentor or a Guru

themasterteacherclericmoris-pcsconflictedcopy2011-03-22-121105205235-phpapp02-thumbnail-4

“Life is like a dense forest with numerous traps, wild animals and too complicated to cross. If you try to cross this forest by yourself, there is a very high chance that you might fall into some trap, lose your way or be attacked by animals and you might never make it out of the forest to reach your destination.

But if you take the help of a guide who has travelled the jungle many times and knows each and every corner of it, then you’ve nothing to worry about. You can put your Faith in the guide and he will take you safely to your destination by showing you the right track each time you lose your path.”

Such is the Guru or Master; the Guru will guide you, protect you and help you in every moment of life. He will protect you from the innumerable traps (distractions) in life and keep you on track. All you have to do is have complete faith in the Guru’s words and instructions and tell him whatever you choose to have in life, and the Guru will thus Guide you towards your destination holding your delicate fingers. He will carry you in his arms in times of difficulty and give you strength beyond measure.

“Your family, your friends and your relatives will never be with you forever but your Master will be with you in every moment and forever – in this lifetime, the next and for eternity”

The word ‘Guru’ is a Sanskrit word. ‘Gu’ means “darkness”, ‘ru’ means “removal”. So the word ‘Guru’ means the one who illumines the intelligence and removes ignorance that is obstructing the full development ol his pupils. The word ‘Guru’ also has another meaning ‘Gu’ means, “not limited by attributes” and ‘ru’ means, “not affected by appearances”. So the Guru is one who is free from prejudice and treats all pupils with equal love.

God is the Greatest Master and to have his guidance all you’ve got to do is read whichever Holy Scripture you believe in. Every holy scripture in the world conveys the same message, so it doesn’t matter which you read.

Silence in thought is what matters !

“Silence not only in words but also in thought is important. There is no sense being silent on the outside but inside burning and mentally abusing the world in general. Silence means tranquility ; verbally and from within”

– Ruzbeh Bharucha

“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.”

– Mother Teresa

“In Prayer, you talk to God, but it is meditation that God speaks to you in all his glory”

Walk by Faith, not fear

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”
― J.M. BarriePeter Pan

Walk by Faith ! Neither by fear nor by sight

“Faith does move mountains….”

All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Most people think that faith means believing something; oftener it means trying something, giving it a chance to prove itself”

 – Henry Ford

Psalm27_FaithNotFear

Fearless !

“There is nothing to be afraid of except to be afraid of not having faced all your fears and failures, because you wouldn’t want to reach the final moment and still be scared of something…

Live your life as wisely as you can – for you are a messenger of life and your life is a message for many you don’t even know”

THE TRUTH !

300dpi_group_ClosertoTruth_Title_TextOnly300dpi

On this journey called Life, YOU are the central character (Yes ! you play the lead role) and everyone in your life – right from the president of your country to the sweeper on the streets are all playing a role in your life. Your friends, your family, your work mates – all play a role exactly defined for them by the writer (Universal consciousness – God).

The characters in your life either push you towards your goal or deviate you away from it. And you have a free will, so the choice is yours if you want to move towards the goal defined by God – ‘Self Realization’ or pursue something else.

The most important thing that you can learn is – NOTHING IS REAL. The people, the objects, the circumstances that you see around you are not real and are mere illusions that help you to live your life and attain the goal of REALIZING AND ACTUALIZING YOURSELF.

So, the good thing here is – You do not have to be afraid of anything or anyone, doesn’t matter how big they are because in the end everything is a mere illusion and YOUR JOB IS LIVE THE BEST LIFE YOU CAN, MAKE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE, CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF OTHERS AND FILL THEIR HEARTS WITH JOY BECAUSE HAPPINESS IS REAL ONLY WHEN SHARED.

All the work that you do – your 9-5 job, your business and stuff like that are not the primary goals of your life, these things are mere entertainment that save you from boredom.

THE ONLY GOAL WORTH PURSUING IN LIFE IS – “BECOMING ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE (GOD or SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS or  whatever y0u choose to call it), only then you’ll realize yourself.”

ONLY WHEN YOU BECOME ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE, YOU’LL REALIZE THAT YOU ARE NOT YOUR BODY BUT INSTEAD YOU ARE EVERYTHING and EVERY PERSON AROUND YOU. YOU ARE THE FLOWERS, THE BIRDS, THE ANIMALS, THE WIND, THE RIVERS, THE OCEANS, THE STARS AND THE GALAXIES.

ONLY WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE, WOULD YOU REALIZE THAT YOU’RE THE UNIVERSE AND YOU ARE ONE WITH GOD.

Keep this in mind and Realize it for yourself – “there is nothing to fear, nothing to be scared of. No one and nothing is greater than you, nothing can harm you because you are the child of God. You are an Eternal Being and the only meaningful goal you have is UNION WITH THE SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS. Live your life without fear and do whatever you wish to – but in such a way that it doesn’t harm anyone rather it contributes to the well being of all and brings Joy to everyone in your Life. Only then you can be happy – because happiness is real only when shared.”

A glimpse of what I am trying to talk about can be seen in the film – The Groundhog Day

It’s your Life !

“Do not let anyone tell you how you must look or act just because you are a man or a woman. You have boundless potential that can only be limited when you believe that your social identity is really who you are. Who you are is not a perfectly measured object. There is tremendous elasticity in who you can be. It is up to you to decide the shape you give yourself.”

~ 17th Karmapa
